A reflection written by Clinton Yip

Before outward bound, I remember the school magazine Chimes and some senior form students said that outward bound would involve activities like hiking, kayaking, cooking etc. Most activities will need strong physical endurance, but I am not good in sports and don’t have high physical fitness level, so I was scared if I could finish the training successfully. Also, when I knew I was going to Wong Wan Chau, I heard that it was a devastated island with no facilities nor electricity, I was worried about it. After that, I saw the weather report and was shocked and further worried when it stated most days will be rainy days. However, I still wanted to make some new friends, and meet my old friends in SSCPS. In a nutshell, although I am worried and scared, I still hoped outward bound could enhance my physical strength, perseverance, leadership, teamwork and friendship.

In outward bound, our group mainly focused on kayaking with a little hiking. We kayaked from one place to another, for example Kat O and Lai Chi Wo. Also, we hiked in Lai Chi Wo, precisely Tiu Tang Lung hill.

Throughout the training, I learnt the importance of teamwork. I remembered we chose the wrong path when hiking, and we needed to climb up the steep hill with the help of trees and brambles, this was a memorable experience because we helped each other until the final success.

Moreover, in the training, I demonstrated perseverance. It was a hardship to kayak from one island to another non-stop, as my arms were tired and I was exhausted, however, seeing the destination gradually closing in, and the other boats were getting further and further away, I carried on and told myself “I can do it!”. As mentioned before, the hiking path was extremely steep, and every wrong path could lead to a fatal accident, it was definitely undoubtedly tiring to walk up the steep slope, but I managed to continue and did not stop and rest much. This enhanced my physical endurance.

In these 5-days-4-nights, I cooperated with my group mates and made new friends. Feelings of success and victory surged inside me when I finished a task.

These are just a tip of an iceberg of the much things I have learnt. I am joyful and satisfied about this journey overall, as my expectations were fulfilled and the things learnt were uncountable, just to name a few: teamwork, perseverance etc.
