Benevolence House was chosen as the name for this new project in line with the College’s mission to inculcate in students a strong sense of moral and spiritual integrity. The Chinese name of the building (尚善樓) alludes to the Confucian classic The Great Learning (大學), which says: “What the Great Learning teaches, is to illustrate illustrious virtue; to renovate the people; and to rest in the highest excellence”. (大學之道,在明明德,在親民,在止於至善。) The English word “benevolence” can be traced back to two Latin words: bene, meaning “good”, and velle, meaning “to wish”. The name therefore reflects our earnest hope that our boys and girls will do good and be upright individuals with the highest moral standards.
